Learning
Watching a child take their first steps in reading is a unique experience for parents. It's both exciting and challenging, and many wonder how they can best support their child. With a few simple methods, you can make reading fun, effective, and encouraging!
Here are some ways that have worked well.
By READING daily
By choosing interesting stories
By encouraging discussion
By giving praise and encouragement
By showing patience
Daily reading creates a sense of routine and security in a child's life. Short sessions are even more important than long ones. Consider if the child is tired and opt for a shorter reading that day. A child's learning to read doesn't replace being read to – it's great to stick to reading a page or a story before bedtime.
Choosing books
The subject matter is very important. Select books that spark interest because children learn faster when they connect with the material. Choose books about animals, cars, or adventures that the child loves.
Make reading a bonding time. Let the child point to words or pictures that spark curiosity and answer their questions. You can also take the initiative to point out something that catches your attention and ask the child about it. Ask, for example, what the child would do if they were a character in the story or what might happen next. Discuss characters and events to enhance vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking.
Praise and encouragement while reading
It's important for the child to receive praise and encouragement. Small progress matters a lot, and positive reinforcement boosts confidence. For instance, you can commend the child for reading an entire line without help or for making an effort even if it doesn't go perfectly. Phrases like, "Great that you keep going even though this is a tough sentence," or "Well done for remembering that word," are music to a child's ears.
Be patient. The pace of progress varies and the child needs to feel support, not pressure. Warmth and attention while reading foster positive feelings.
With these simple yet effective methods, the reading journey will not only be successful but also joyful. Parents don't need to be experts to support their children; warmth, interest, and togetherness are often enough to lay the foundation for a lifelong love of reading.
